In homage to the late, great Harry Houdini on the anniversary of his birthday, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square sideshow performer Albert Cadabra will execute Houdini’s infamous straitjacket escape hanging from the ceiling of the New York City Odditorium.
On Sunday, March 24 at noon, Albert Cadabra will hang 35 feet off of the ground, bound only from his ankles, and attempt a full escape from the restraints of a regulation straitjacket. Cadabra is master of ceremonies and lead performer of Ripley’s Sideshow Wonders, a live, family-friendly sideshow with performances of the strange and bizarre.
“On any typical day, guests of the Odditorium are left in complete awe watching sword swallowing clowns, fire breathing entertainers, and performers that hammer six inch spikes into their face,” said Michael Hirsch, president and general manager of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square. “Now we’re taking it to another level. This is the first time Albert will attempt such a perilous stunt at Ripley’s Times Square…it’s truly something people need to see to believe.”
Harry Houdini first performed the “suspended straitjacket escape” in 1915, precariously hanging 45 feet off of the ground from the Minneapolis Evening Tribune office building. He executed the escape just a handful of other times through 1920, including Washington, D.C. in April of 1916, and in New York City in November of 1917.
Albert Cadabra is a professional, award-winning comedy sideshow magician who delivers powerful, astonishing and devilishly wild magic. Albert pushes and twists boundaries of the art of magic with unique performances including eating razor blades and a three foot long balloon, hammering six inch spikes into his face, electrocuting himself with 2,000 volts of electricity and turning his assistant into a gorilla. He makes people and animals appear and vanish at will and escapes from chains, shackles, locked crates and straitjackets—all with the flair, style, class and great sense of humor.
